Temnokt Concept: Eggs and Nurseries

When a female is about to lay her charge, she is taken to the nursery by her mate, and there she lays her egg or eggs. The color of the shell determines the color of hair and underbelly; when an female lays more than one egg, said eggs are piled together in the 'Nest', while single eggs are put a respectable distance from others to distinguish. A parent will be able to identify its eggs among thousands, which created the famous phrase 'Temnokt eyes can see through a thousand lies'. 

All eggs are kept in a single room, upon a nest made out of straw, and a Caretaker incubates them. Caretakers are usually female, due to the belief that females have a deeper connection with developing embryos than males because they carried the eggs in their wombs. When an egg starts to crack, the Caretaker is responsible for calling the parents of the single egg or clutch of eggs, since they must be the ones the hatchlings first see when they break free. 

The average length it takes for an egg to hatch is three months. After the first month, the embryo starts recognizing voices and some think they can even see the world outside their eggs. This is why parents of an egg must speak to their clutches of eggs and visit them constantly so that the embryo will identify them when it hatches. According to an interview with a Caretaker drady, most of the caretakers are infertile females who decided to dedicate their lives in looking after the eggs, like the eggs they would never have. However, while it makes them feel a bit of satisfaction for helping others with their children, it doesn't completely fill the void inside them, and it does hurt when the eggs hatch and are take by the parents.
